Neighborhood Initiatives

The HNA is run by volunteers, and our neighbors have a lot to show for it. Here are some of the projects we’ve taken on, and the ones we keep going year-round.

Completed

Traffic calming on Havenscourt Blvd & Avenal Ave

Neighbors organized for, and won, traffic calming measures along Havenscourt Boulevard and Avenal Avenue to slow down speeding cars and make our streets safer for kids, walkers, cyclists and drivers alike.

Ongoing

Traffic circle gardens

Our traffic circles do double duty as little neighborhood gardens. HNA volunteers plant, weed and care for them so they stay green and welcoming all year.

Every third Saturday

Neighborhood cleanups

On the third Saturday of each month, our Beautification HAT tackles a different spot in the neighborhood: picking up litter, planting, pruning, weeding or clearing storm drains. All ages welcome, and we bring the gear. Check the events calendar or email cleanup@havenscourt.org.

Four times a year

Quarterly community cleanups with 30X & 30Y

Four of those Saturdays each year are bigger quarterly cleanups, organized together with our neighbors at the Beat 30X and Beat 30Y Neighborhood Crime Prevention Councils. More hands, more ground covered.

Grant-funded

Native trees for Havenscourt families

The HNA secured a grant to provide neighborhood families with native trees to plant at home, adding shade, beauty and habitat for birds and pollinators across Havenscourt.

Ongoing

Cleanup tool library

Want to touch up a spot on your own? Borrow trash pickers, shovels, gloves, high-visibility vests, trash and green waste bags and more. Email cleanup@havenscourt.org to arrange a pickup.

Ongoing

Havenscourt crime data log

We keep a running log of historical crime data for Havenscourt, so residents can see public safety trends and patterns in our own neighborhood. See it on our Public Safety page.

Monthly

Joint meetings with Beat 30X

We share our monthly meeting with the Beat 30X Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council, so neighbors can hear from the Oakland Police Department and city staff and raise concerns in one place.

Got an idea for the neighborhood?

Many of these projects started with one neighbor and a good idea. Join a Havenscourt Action Team, come to a meeting, or email us, and let’s make it happen.
